“Early in his military career, [Milo Speranzo] was stationed in Puerto Rico but often worked in Colombia, which was in the midst of a protracted civil war. During his overnight stays on a coffee farm near Cartagena, which housed a bed and breakfast, the owner would bring the soldiers coffee in a Moka pot.
Despite the sometimes-dire situation in Colombia at that time, Speranzo, who had never traveled outside Pennsylvania before entering the military, was able to appreciate his situation.
“I was able to take a step back and say, ‘Wow, I’m young, I’m drinking coffee at a coffee farm in Colombia and I’ve never left Pitcairn in my life,’” he said.“
